Start freeHow is overtime calculated in Egypt?
Divide the monthly basic salary by the contract hours to get the hourly rate, then multiply each overtime hour by 135% (day) or 170% (night). Example: 6,000 EGP ÷ 208 hours = 28.85 EGP an hour. Ten daytime hours pay 28.85 × 1.35 × 10 = 389.42 EGP and four night hours pay 28.85 × 1.70 × 4 = 196.15 EGP, so the month's overtime is 585.58 EGP.
What about the weekly rest day and public holidays?
An employee who works the weekly rest day earns an extra day's wage and gets a substitute rest day the following week (Article 121). Work on an official public holiday earns twice the day's wage on top of the normal pay, or a substitute day off if the employee asks for one in writing (Article 129).
How many hours can an employee work?
Normal hours are 8 a day and 48 a week (Article 117), with at least one hour of rest and no more than five consecutive hours of work (Article 118). Even with overtime, an employee may not be at the workplace for more than 12 hours a day (Article 121).
